First Ski of the Season

Yesterday, October 30, 2016, I went skiing. I’m so excited that I got the chance to ski this early in the season. My family, (my dad, my mom, my younger sister and me) set out in the morning. We drove from our house, up the Duffy lake road and to the Joffre Lakes parking lot. We hiked up to the third lake with our skis on the side of our bags and our ski boots inside them. They trail was icy and slippery, but we avoided falling. We were planning on heading up towards the Mattier Glacier and skiing down a moraine. Arriving at the top lake we saw that there was far too little snow to ski where we were planning on so we headed towards the right, by T’zl. We hiked up the snow covered boulders and crossed streams. When we came out of the trees we put our skis and skins on. It felt so weird to be back on the snow. I was so excited for the way down. We skinned up for about an hour and a half. We came to a rise in the valley and decided to head back due to the time. The first turns were amazing, but strange.

Finding balance after such a long period of time should be difficult, but it only took two turns. Muscle memory is so cool. The slope was wind affected, but filled with pockets of fresh snow. I was surprised how nice it was, not icy and well covered. I did not hit any rocks all the way down. The ski down lasted about three minutes, the hike up had taken three hours, but it was worth it. Feeling the snow under my feet again made me so excited for the next six months. I can’t wait to get out there again.
