Clothing Presentation at MEC

On Thursday October 4th 2018 I had been invited to do a presentation at MEC North Vancouver. It would be about clothing, specifically while trekking to Everest Base Camp. Though I have never been to Everest Base Camp, or even Asia at all, I do know a thing or two about how to dress on an expedition. The presentation was for Chasing Sunrise and their members who would be going to Everest Base Camp in late October of 2018. I was super excited and honoured to have been asked to do this. As I researched about trekking to the base of the world’s tallest mountain, I related it to my own experiences and wished I could be going on the trip too. I thought about what helped me the most with layering and general guidelines to make for happy hikers. Additionally I looked through MEC’s website and put together outfits that I would love to wear while trekking for weeks at a time. When I arrived at the store I picked up some of these items to show the participants. I was late because traffic was very bad, so I couldn’t get everything I would have liked. I was pretty nervous starting to talk for multiple reasons, first I wasn’t sure if what I had prepared was what was being expected. Also, I hadn’t memorized what I was going to say, which I usually do to a certain degree, and we were late. I didn’t think I did very well at the start, but there were lots of questions so I think it was beneficial for the people listening.

It felt very cool to be sharing things that I know, that aren’t directly related to Mt. Logan. It made me feel valued for more than just having broken a record. After presenting to the group as a whole I had some rad conversations with individuals, and I was really hating that I was stuck in school. Their trek was successful, there are photos posted on instagram @chasingsunrise and there are tons of photos and videos on their EBC stories. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this and hope that I can teach others anything I can about hiking, mountaineering and nature in general.
